Mobile Resume Builder

A tool to help candidates create job specific resumes
and apply from the phone

Problem

People are on the move now more than ever. The only device that is constantly by their side is the mobile phone. If the opportunity arises, how can they create or customize their resume on the go and apply to their dream job?

Solution

We had built a mobile resume application that not only allowed users to build resumes, it also provided feedback on best practices, writing techniques and strategies when applying for a job.

COMPETITIVE REVIEW

At the time there were very few similar tools in the market. The one that existed were poorly designed and required users to spend a lot of time learning the interface before even getting to the resume building part. Based on these findings we started with a “clean slate” approach in designing the application.

EARLY CONCEPT WIREFRAMES

The ensure customer feedback was efficiently incorporated into the product and developers did not have to make significant changes in the code close to the release date, we had adopted a rapid-iteration process. We built our prototypes in Axure RP and tested and iterated through a particular feature in one-week intervals. At the end of the week the design would incorporate all the relevant customer feedback thus, significantly reducing the probability of further changes later in the development stages.

This approach helped us avoid some embarrassing (and potentially costly) mistakes. For example, although we provided writing examples throughout the process, users wanted examples they can immediately use and modify in the text.

usability testing

Employing a rapid-iteration approach saved us a lot of usability testing at the end of development. However, it did not mean we could forgo this important step entirely. During this stage we uncovered more usability issues. However, because we dedicated significant time to elicit customer feedback at the beginning of the process, the issues found now were easily fixed before release.

Final Design

Below is the final version of the path to change an existing section of the resume.

Results

The application was very well received in the market. Our approach increased conversion by 6% and retention by 2%. Based on the number of new subscriptions we were able to launch a new solution for companies to connect with our job seekers.
